At The Design Barn, we curate one of the most extensive luxury fabric libraries in the West of Ireland. We believe that choosing textiles should be a slow, sensory, and most importantly a human process.
The Limitation of the Lens
Digital photography, no matter how high-definition, struggles to capture the soul of a textile. A screen backlights an image, adding a digital glow to the color that doesn’t exist in the real world.
When you visit our fabric studio in Galway, you see the “true” pigment. We often encourage our clients to take fabric headers over to the windows to see how the Atlantic light – which can be soft and grey one minute and piercingly bright the next—interacts with the weave. A navy velvet might look midnight-black on your laptop, but in person, you’ll see the subtle undertones of teal or charcoal that define its character.
Mastering “The Hand” and The Drape
In the textile industry, we use the term “the hand” to describe the physical feel, weight, and drape of a fabric. This is the “expert’s secret” to a successful room.

For Bespoke Curtains: You need to feel the “heft” of a linen or silk. Does it have the body to hold a crisp pleat, or is it intended to puddle softly on the floor?

For Upholstery: You need to understand the “pile.” If you are choosing a luxury velvet for a sofa, seeing how the light catches the pile direction in person ensures you won’t be surprised by how the fabric “shades” once it is upholstered.
The Human Element: Conversations, Coffee, and Connection
Perhaps the most overlooked benefit of visiting the studio isn’t the fabric itself, but the human connection. In an era of automated chatbots and faceless “add to cart” buttons, we offer something that simply cannot be beaten: a real conversation.

The Martindale Rub Test: If you are sourcing fabric for a busy family home, we look for high rub counts. Feeling the density of the weave helps you understand why one fabric is suited for a decorative chair while another is “contract grade” and built to last.

Composition and Breathability: Natural fibers like wool, silk, and linen have a thermal quality that synthetic “lookalikes” found online cannot replicate. In the studio, we can compare a 100% Belgian linen against a polyester blend; the difference in texture and “coolness” to the touch is immediate.
Visualizing Scale and Pattern Repeat
One of the most common mistakes in DIY interior design is miscalculating the scale of a pattern. A tiny swatch on a website can be incredibly misleading. In our showroom, we carry large-scale hangers and “waterfall” samples. This allows you to see the full “repeat” of a Cole & Son print or a complex Romo weave. Seeing the pattern at its true size prevents the “pattern shock” that often happens when a custom-made piece arrives at your door.
