No studio to visit, no place to run your hand along a fabric and see how it fell in the light, no one to talk through your ideas with. If you wanted a proper selection of materials for a home project or a client brief, you were looking at a trip to Dublin – and all the time and hassle that came with it.
For Gráinne, that journey was one she made more times than she cared to count.
She Knew the Problem Because She Had Lived It
Gráinne wasn’t observing this gap from a distance. She was experiencing it herself. Working in interiors in the West of Ireland meant constantly working around a very real absence — a place where you could actually explore fabrics and wallcoverings properly, without having to plan a whole day around it.
And the frustrating part was that the demand was clearly there. The West of Ireland is full of beautiful homes and people who put real thought into how they want to live. Designers and homeowners here have always had strong ideas and high standards. What they didn’t have was a studio that matched that ambition on their doorstep.
Gráinne saw that clearly, and she decided to do something about it.

The Design Barn was built on a straightforward idea: the West of Ireland deserved a fabric and wallcovering studio that could stand alongside anything you’d find in Dublin or beyond. Somewhere you could come in, take your time, look through collections properly, and leave feeling genuinely inspired rather than overwhelmed by a screen.
From the very beginning, the focus was on bringing together a thoughtful, carefully chosen range – fabrics, wallcoverings, and soft furnishing materials that cover everything from classic to contemporary. The kind of quality and variety that serious interior projects call for, without the need to travel the length of the country to find it.
